چکیده

This paper describes Roboser (http://www.roboser.com), an autonomous interactive music composition system. The core of the system comprises two components: a program for simulating large-scale neural networks, and an algorithmic composition system. Both components operate in real-time. Data from e.g. cameras, microphones and pressure sensors enter the simulated neural system, which is also used to actively control motor devices such as pantilt cameras and robots. The neural system relays data representing its current operational state on to the algorithmic composition system. The composition system in turn generates musical expressions of these neural states within an a priori stylistic framework. The result is a real-time system controlled by a brain-like structure that behaves and interacts within a given environment and expresses its internal states through music.

Evolutionary Computation Systems for Musical Composition

This work shows a perspective of the different researches on musical composition using evolutionary techniques. It is made a classification based on the critic element of the different compositions. Four types of works are analyzed: Interactive, based on examples, rule-based and autonomous ones. Finally it is proposed the integration of the several works in a common frame, where different appro...

Computational Modeling of Mind and Music

Music can be defi ned as organized sound material in time. This chapter explores the links between the development of ideas about music and those driven by the concept of the embodied mind. Music composition has evolved from symbolic notated pitches to converge onto the expression of sound fi ligrees driven by new techniques of instrumental practice and composition associated with the developme...

Interactive Sonification of the Spatial Behavior of Human and Synthetic Characters in a Mixed-Reality Environment

It is generally admitted that music is a powerful carrier of emotions [4, 21], and that audition can play an important role in enhancing the sensation of presence in Virtual Environments [5, 22]. In mixed-reality environments and interactive multi-media systems such as Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMORPG), the improvement of the user’s perception of immersion is crucial. Nonetheless, the...

An Interactive Music Composition System Based on Autonomous Maintenance of Musical Consistency

Various attempts at automatic music composition systems have been made, but they have not addressed the issue of how the user can edit a composed piece. In this paper, we propose a human-in-the-loop music composition system, in which the manual editing stage is integrated into the composition process. This system first generates a musical piece based on the lyric input by the user. Then, the us...

Towards Adaptive Music Generation by Reinforcement Learning of Musical Tension

Although music is often defined as the “language of emotion”, the exact nature of the relationship between musical parameters and the emotional response of the listener remains an open question. Whereas traditional psychological research usually focuses on an analytical approach, involving the rating of static sounds or preexisting musical pieces, we propose a synthetic approach based on a nove...
